Businesses and residents learn to live together
Dear Editor:

I write in reference to the West Babylon resident’s grievances and objection to the projected new Stop and Shop site in their neighborhood, mindful of congested traffic or intrusion.

Having lived through a similar incident on Long Island. I can relate and present another viewpoint. In my youth, I lived in Massapequa Park, in the vicinity of the projected site for proposed Sunrise Mall. Evident then, even as a child, was the community resistance for the complex. Concern also with foreboding traffic and disturbance issues that would be thrust upon our suburban neighborhood.

Representatives of the Sunrise Mall assured opponents there would be no intrusion, commotion or traffic. They cited the entrance to the Mall as Carman’s Road, which would confine traffic. (The neighborhood is behind Carman’s Road - similar to West Babylon resident’s approximation adjacent to the Route 109 entrance for Stop and Shop.)

Pursuant to the grand opening of the Sunrise Mall, the Mall representative’s pledge of assurance and serenity proved right. Our neighborhood was not hindered or infringed upon. In fact, my family and all the neighboring families became patrons of the Mall, appreciative of the convenient proximity to a shopping center. The new neighbor was eventually welcome with open doors.
