God does not support terrorists
Dear Editor:
During this time of remembrance of the attacks a year ago, I have been reading, listening and watching TV in addition to spending alone time praying in my church’s sanctuary. All of this has raised a question for me. Why does anyone think that what happened is the will of God? The God I worship has only love for the creation, including the environment and all humans. What causes hatred is mistreatment, selfishness and the lack of fairness by us humans. In a time when we are discovering how many business folk have been responsible for those causes of hatred, surely we get a glimpse of how our country must look to places where poverty has been ignored by us. Our history of support for various dictators in other countries, including training people how to treat others brutally, is just one of many reasons why books like The Ugly American and Whatever Became of Sin had to be written. The latest library book I’ve read which holds up a mirror for us to see ourselves is Small Wonder by Barbara Kingsolver. Our oldest son’s latest contribution to our bumper stickers reads: A Closed Mind is a Wonderful Thing to Lose.
In one way, this letter is also about support for the Babylon Library’s new plans to try to meet the needs of our community. Would that more people had cared enough to come to their open house, as well as that more residents would come to read what the library has to offer before they have to throw more books out for lack of space.
