WB Eagles go 2-0 with win over Hills East
by Ronald A. Busse

West Babylon won just three games last season against five losses and finished near the bottom of the Division II standings. But thanks to an abundance of returning senior starters like Anthony Vita, Anthony Salvati and Vinny Zito, the Eagles are enjoying a 2-0 start in 2002.

Despite committing six turnovers (five fumbles, one interception), coach Ron Langella’s flock flew away with a 20-14 victory over Half Hollow Hills East, September 29th. It was the Eagles’ home opener after visiting Riverhead week one, which resulted in a decisive 40-14 triumph.

Defense played a key role in preserving the win for West Babylon when James Massott batted down a pass on fourth-and-goal from the 2-yard line with three minutes remaining. Tim O’Callaghan had four quarterback sacks and five solo tackles, while senior Gene Blanchard and Danny Kowalski each made five tackles and two sacks.

The Eagles led from beginning to end, striking first offensively on a 40-yard pass from Vita to wide receiver Chris Oppitto. Hills East cut the deficit to 7-6, but that is as close as they would get.

Sophomore running back Alton Lucas broke the plane from 20 yards out, stretching the lead to 13-6 in the second quarter. Then a four-yard run by Salvati capped the scoring for West Babylon and made it 20-6 at halftime. Salvati rushed for a total of 80 yards on eight carries.

Their fast start puts the Eagles in a good position to make it to playoff action after a two-year absence. One determining factor will be a key matchup against top seed North Babylon, taking place at home under the lights on Friday, October 11th at 7 p.m.
