In CSD trustee race, one unopposed, one faces challenge Copiague School District residents will vote on two school board candidates in the annual budget and trustee elections scheduled for Tues., May 20th. Running for three-year seats are incumbents Brian J. Sales and Rosemary Natoli. Sales is running unopposed, while Natoli faces opposition from Darline Jackson. Jackson ran unsuccessfully in 2007 for a seat vacated by Denise Mondelli and in 2006 for the seat vacated by Matthew Raber. She is vying for a seat on the school board she said because she believes the school district should be represented by "a person of color." While Jackson was not available for an interview this year due to a family crisis, she said in 2007 that she believes she can bridge the divide that sometimes exists between the board and the community. "As a person who grew up in this community, I see how things have changed and I'd like to work to bring back some of the strong sense of belonging I felt growing up in Copiague," she said in 2006. " I know the board has been working hard on the educational programs and to help our children succeed but I also think it needs to pay more attention to community outreach, particulary since the families in this district represent many different cultures." Natoli said only that she represents "all chil- dren and all families in Copiague" and added that she would like to continue her volunteer service on the school board as the district moves through its transition to a new superintendent. " I have worked hard and am proud of the many accomplishments the district has made in the 18 years I have served on the board," said Natoli. "Our facilities are the finest, and we have made tremendous strides in the educational programs we offer our children and in their achievements." Natoli, who has lived in Copiague for more than 30 years and whose children graduated from the district, said voters should also consider experience. Over the years, she said, she has attended many conferences and workshops, which have educated and prepared her for the many challenges school board trustees face. "Especially at this time as we move to a new superintendent and face many changes, experience is important," she said.
Jackson is a member of NACEC and NATA and a resident of Copiague since 1969. She is a Copiague graduate and owns and operates her own catering business. She attended Farmingdale State Univeristy and the Fashion Institute of Technology. She has been active in PTA and in the Susan Wiley Share Decision Making team.
