Educators challenge two incumbent trustees on the DP School Board
by Tiffany Elliott

The school board race in Deer Park this year has two longtime incumbents who say their service and experience on the board should win them reelection. Board President Dennis Ryan goes up against challenger Magda Parvey, while incumbent trustee Ron P. Wayne is fighting to save his seat against a challenge from newcomer Nick Cangero. The candidates are seeking 3-year terms. The election is Tues., May 20.

Board president Ryan, who has been on the board since 2000, came to the district concerned about the lack of technology, and has accomplished what he set out to do. Because he helped the district secure more than $7-million in funding, the district has become one of the leading technological districts on Long Island, he said.

"When I set out to do something, I see it through," said Ryan. "Whether it's increased technology, the new energy plan or even keeping student programs going, I remain committed to the needs of this district."

Ryan, who has also set his sights on making the district "greener," said the district is moving forward with that program. The district has just signed a plan with Keyspan that will save residents $500,00 a year, and will keep 752 tons of carbon out of Deer Park's air.

"I am very proud of this plan," said Ryan. "Keyspan is lowering our energy costs by giving us four free boilers and fixing another six that will make us 95 percent energy efficient. We'll even produce energy that we'll sell back to the company.all without spending any money from our budget…it's just amazing."

Ryan also lobbies in Albany for additional funding and serves on the National School Boards Association in several capacities. The father of three sits on many board of education committees and volunteers with his children's sports programs.

Incumbent Ron Wayne credits the positive growth in the district has seen to his work with his colleagues on the board, administration and staff.

"As a trustee, I am part of a process and because we all work together so well, the district is getting better and better," said Wayne, a 12-year board member who was recently presented with the Suffolk County Organization for the Promotion of Education (SCOPE) School Board Service Award.

Wayne's financial background makes him a key member of the auditing and finance committees who leads the district in the budget process. If reelected, the father of two hopes to continue steering the district in its positive direction, while increasing maintenance projects on the district's structures.

Magda Parvey is a principal and has children in the district. She said she believes she can offer a unique perspective as both a parent and educator on the board.

"Understanding how a school system works will assist me in making informed decisions regarding district polices, procedures and expenditures," she said. "Deer Park has always been a close-knit community with a strong sense of family and by fostering communication with all members of that community, everyone will be actively involved in the district.

Nick Cangero is a technology and career education administrator who said he hopes to get everyone involved in the school district. "This will be accomplished by working closely with teachers and staff to develop strategies for communicating more often with families and community members," he said. "By varying the way we communicate with parents and community, we will successfully meet our challenges." Those challenges include families in which both parents work or have young children and who have little time left for school activities or meetings.

Voting for the school board and for the budget will take place on Tuesday, May 20 from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the administrative building at 1881 Deer Park Ave., Deer Park.
