Free diabetes foot screening June 5
Free foot education and foot screenings are being offered June 5, 4 to 7 p.m. at Southside Hospital's Health Institute, 301 East Main St., Bay Shore. Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County, the Diabetes Resource Coalition of Long Island, in collaboration with Dr. Peter Mancuso and Dr. Shannon Maloney of NY Foot and Ankle Specialists invite anyone with pre-diabetes and diabetes to schedule an appointment.
People with diabetes have a high risk for developing skin problems, including infections due to dry cracked skin. Complications from diabetes such as nerve damage, foot deformities and diminished blood flowincrease the risk of developing a foot wound. Ulcers of the foot or leg affect approximately 15 percent of those with diabetes. Healthy feet are important to those with diabetes as serious complications can be identified through a simple foot exam. If you experience any "tingling" in your feet you may be experiencing nerve damage from diabetes.
Call 631-231-1401 for information and to schedule a 15-minute foot check that could make a difference in preventing a serious foot problem.
