Babylon hosts Earth Day celebration
The Town of Babylon celebrated Earth Day on May 3, 2008. Over 30 eco-friendly vendors were on site to educate the public about what they can do to preserve our environment. In addition to the vendors, residents and Town employees participated in the Town of Babylon's Nike Reuse A Shoe project where worn-out athletic shoes of any brand were collected. The Town contributed over 800 sneakers to donate to the program. Once the sneakers are delivered to the Nike Outlet they are then processed and recycled into material used in sports surfaces like basketball courts, tennis courts, athletic fields, running tracks and playgrounds for young people around the world.
"I am happy to have sponsored a celebration of Earth Day within the Town of Babylon," said Supervisor Bellone. I made a commitment to myself and the residents of the Town of Babylon to do whatever I can to help preserve our environment and decrease our reliance on fossil fuels. The Town of Babylon Earth Day celebration was a huge success. Many residents attended and were educated as to what each and every person can do to preserve our planet. The highlight of the event was the awarding of scholarships to middle school students who submitted ecotech science projects. The Town of Babylon in partnership with Babylon Covanta awarded over $2,900 in scholarships to seven students from the Town of Babylon.
