Babylon High School students mentor younger peers

As a kickoff to the school's upcoming science fair, Babylon Memorial Grade School's approximatly 150 fifth-grade students received some special input on their proposed science projects from more than 35 Babylon-Junior Senior High School science students as part of the school's Annual Science Project Mentoring Project. With the help of K-12 science director Jeff Kenney, grade 10-12 high school students enrolled in the school's Advanced Placement (AP) chemistry and honors chemistry classes spent a morning meeting with small groups of students, and working with them on fine tuning their project's topic, details, and method for completion.

"This is a great way for the high school students to give back and share the experience they have learned over the years," stated Kenney. During their meetings, the high school students spoke about the need to include a variety of variables, how to best chart results, and the steps to follow when developing and conducting their experiment. After speaking with her high school representative about her project topic "How Fingertips Can be Used as Eyes," fifth grader Anna Fermin stated, "The high school students were really helpful in guiding me through the scientific method and steps I should take when conducting my project. I learned a few new vocabulary words, too, from my mentor, that I am going to use in my project's description."

Recalling what it is like to be back at the grade school for the program, tenth grader Marc Panarelli stated, "It is amazing to realize how much we have learned since leaving this school. The students I met with today had some really great ideas for their projects and I know they will conduct some great research."
