Honoring the lives of Bryan and Ryan
Not only were Manigault and Horodnicki close friends; both were also respected members of the soccer team. Manigault collapsed near his locker inbetween classes nearly three years ago, while pal Horodnicki, a 2005 graduate, was killed this past summer after falling off the back of a town truck while on the job. Just months after Manigault's death, Horodnicki took the lead in coordinating a charity soccer game which first established the Manigault scholarship. In front of a packed Deer Park High School gymnasium, members from both families, graduates from the Class of 2005, current Deer Park varsity basketball players, and other friends were on hand to enjoy the spirited community competition and celebrate the lives of Manigault and Horodnicki. While the 2005 alumni came away with a 51-41 victory over the staff, the event was a triumph for all involved. Volunteers sold memorabilia, including t-shirts with both boys' numbers printed on the back, commemorative bracelets, and cardboard soccer ball cutouts, illustrating handwritten messages from students paying tribute to the boys to be hung in the hallways.
Health eacher Sheryl Deacon and the Deer Park High School Student Council helped coordinate the game with boys varsity basketball coach John McCaffrey. Coach McCaffrey also coached the alumni team, while Victor LoMonaco coached the staff. Health and Physical Education Director Frank Leahy served as the referee for the game. Proceeds from the boys varsity basketball game held the following day were also donated to the scholarship funds. Shown, left to right, are Helen Horodnicki Ryan's mom; Heather Horodnicki, Ryan's sister; Tim Horodnicki, Ryan's father; John McCaffrey boys varsity basketball coach/social studies teacher); Christine DiProperzio Student Council advisor; Dawn King , Bryan's mother; Tyrone King, Bryan's stepfather; Sheryl Deacon, health teacher/unofficial fundraiser co-coordinator and Jennifer Mermen, Student Council president joined together to pay homage and help raise funds for scholarships in honor of two great young men.
