Honoring the lives of Bryan and Ryan
Deer Park High School alumni & staff play ball to benefit Manigault Horodnicki Scholarships

DeerPark High School hosted a Teacher/ Alumni Memorial Basketball fundraiser that raised $2,008 for scholarships dedicated in memory of two former students - Bryan Manigault and Ryan Horodnicki. Both young men tragically lost their lives at an early age. Alumni from Deer Park High School's Class of 2005 - the year the boys would've graduated together - and current high school staff, played together in the coed charity basketball game.

Not only were Manigault and Horodnicki close friends; both were also respected members of the soccer team. Manigault collapsed near his locker inbetween classes nearly three years ago, while pal Horodnicki, a 2005 graduate, was killed this past summer after falling off the back of a town truck while on the job. Just months after Manigault's death, Horodnicki took the lead in coordinating a charity soccer game which first established the Manigault scholarship.

In front of a packed Deer Park High School gymnasium, members from both families, graduates from the Class of 2005, current Deer Park varsity basketball players, and other friends were on hand to enjoy the spirited community competition and celebrate the lives of Manigault and Horodnicki. While the 2005 alumni came away with a 51-41 victory over the staff, the event was a triumph for all involved. Volunteers sold memorabilia, including t-shirts with both boys' numbers printed on the back, commemorative bracelets, and cardboard soccer ball cutouts, illustrating handwritten messages from students paying tribute to the boys to be hung in the hallways.

At Deer Park High School's annual Senior Awards Ceremony, to be held at the end of the school year, one senior will receive the Bryan Manigault scholarship and two deserving seniors, one boy and one girl, will be awarded the Ryan Horodnicki scholarship. Both families were influential in establishing criteria for their respective scholarships, which include the demonstration of s t rong character traits, which both boys possessed.

Health

eacher Sheryl Deacon and the Deer Park High School Student Council helped coordinate the game with boys varsity basketball coach John McCaffrey. Coach McCaffrey also coached the alumni team, while Victor LoMonaco coached the staff. Health and Physical Education Director Frank Leahy served as the referee for the game. Proceeds from the boys varsity basketball game held the following day were also donated to the scholarship funds.
