BABYLON HIGH WALL NOMINEES - 2008

The Babylon Varsity Boosters have announced their Year 2008 Wall of Fame inductees. Babylon's Wall features those who have achieved significant success in the school's athletic program. The induction ceremony is held in the spring of every other year.

This year's inductees include nine individuals from the school's rich athletic past. The induction ceremony will be held on Saturday, June 7, at the Wall of Fame in the BHS gymnasium lobby. The individual honorees are Craig Barnes, Troy Barnes, Gerard Brown, Melissa DeMicco, Steve Farley, Andrea LaBarbara, Miranda Moleski, Tim O'Donnell and Joe Osovet. Craig Barnes (Class of 1988) was a star in Winter and Spring Track who set BHS records in the 300 meter and 400 meter events. His versatility included racing in the 60, 200 and 600, as well as the 4x200 relay, the 4x400 relay and the long jump. He had also been active in the Junior High School Chorus.

Craig then went on to Dowling College where he graduated with a BS in Math. His activities at the time included local chess competitions. He is currently a supervisor with the Postal Service in Bethpage and actively maintains a real estate license.

Craig and his son Evan reside in Central Islip. He is the brother of fellow inductee Troy Barnes. Troy Barnes ('92) also starred at BHS in Winter Track, Spring Track and Cross Country. He set the school record for the 200 meters (22 seconds flat) and in the 100 meters (11 seconds flat). He also competed in the 4x100 relay. He was a member of the Cross Country League Championship team and was also a running back and defensive back for the Football Panthers. His other activities included the Chorus and the Culture Club at BHS.

In college, he graduated with a BS in Psychology at St. John's University, where he also ran for the track team in the 400 meters. He now works for the Postal Service.

Troy and his wife Elysia have three children and reside in Tampa, Florida. He and fellow inductee, brother Troy Barnes, ran track on the same BHS team in 1988. Gerard Brown ('43) starred in Baseball, Basketball and Football at BHS from 1941-43. In Basebal l , he helped lead the team to two Suffolk County Championships. He pitched three no-hitters and was either the team's Most Valuable Player or co- MVP in each of his varsity seasons while being named All County each year. In Basketball, Gerard was on the school's County Championship team in 1941. He won school MVP honors the next two years and set the single season scoring record for BHS in 1943. He was class president in his freshman and sophomore years.

During World War II, Gerry served in the US Merchant Marines in 1943-44 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the US Army serving in England, the Philippines and Japan from 1944-46. He later graduated from St. John's University with a BBS in 1950. While in college, he starred in Baseball, winning outstanding pitcher honors in the Metropolitan Conference from 1947-49 and performing in the College World Series in Wichita in 1949.

From 1954-91, Gerry's career was in insurance with the Brown Agency and the Jeremiah Robbins Agency. He is a Trustee Emeritus for Good Samaritan Hospital where he served from 1965-95 and was Chairman of the Board from 1986-88. He and his wife Rita now reside in Lindenhurst. They have four children, seven grandchildren and a great granddaughter. Melissa DeMicco ('92) was the Suffolk County Cross Country Runner of the Year in 1992. A distance runner, her main sports were Cross Country, Winter Track and Spring Track. She excelled in the 1500 meters and competed in the New York State Championships in all four of her high school years. She was the County Champion in her senior

year andConference Champion in 10th grade.

In college, Melissa graduated from the University of Virginia with a BA in Theater. While there, she ran Cross Country and competed in the 3000 meters. Following graduation, Melissa began a career in film acquisition and distribution in Los Angeles. She has participated in the Virginia Film Festival and the 50th San Francisco International Film Festival.

She now resides in Oakland, California and is working with the National Film Preserve. Her current project is the Telluride Film Festival. Steve Farley ('77) was an All Suffolk County strong forward with two BHS basketball championship teams. He starred for three years on the Varsity. He also was a tackle in Football on both sides of the ball for two seasons and played right field for two years in Baseball. Steve went on to play basketball at Western Maryland College for four years and was team captain for two. He has worked for Toyota Motor Sales for twenty-five years, initially in Long Island and now for Darcars, the Toyota dealership in Silver Springs, Maryland, where he is the General Manager.

He and his wife Jan reside in Taneytown, Maryland, the birthplace of Francis Scott Key. They have three daughters. Andrea LaBarbara ('92) was a star shortstop for the BHS Softball team for four years at the Varsity level. She was also a forward wing for the Field Hockey League Championshi p team making All League in the sport.

She attended a number of colleges and achieved a BS in Aeronautical Science from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida. Her later activities included snow skiing in Vermont and Utah and she has been a competitor in the Mogul. Andrea also enjoys water skiing.

She now resides in Foxboro, Massachusetts and is engaged to Bob Zeolla. Andrea is an airline captain and pilots a 50 passenger Embrear jet for Continental Airlines. Miranda Moleski ('93) gained All-America honors as a track athlete in the Pentathlon. She excelled in Track and Field while at BHS, competing in many events. She also ran Cross Country, played Varsity Volleyball and competed in Varsity Gymnastics. Miranda was a member of the National Honor Society, the Lion's Club and Student Government.

While at Rutgers University, she achieved a BA and a Masters in Social Work and a BA in Women's Studies. She is currently completing a Masters in School District Administration at Stony Brook University. As a college athlete, she was the Metropolitan Area Pentathlon Champion three times and the Heptathlon Champion twice. She was All Big East three times in the High Jump, Heptathlon and Pentathlon.

Careerwise, she serves as a Dean at Western Suffolk BOCES. Miranda and husband Alex have two sons and reside in Rockaway Beach. Charles "Tim" O'Donnell ('62) was an outstanding lineman at Babylon for six years (two on the Junior High team and one on the Freshman club). He starred on both sides of the ball as a center, guard and tackle on offense and as a linebacker and tackle on defense. Tim was named All County in 1960 when the Panthers were co-champions and in 1961 with the championship team. He also played freshman baseball and basketball at BHS and served as president of the Boys Leaders Club.

Following high school, Tim served with the US Coast Guard from 1962-66. He was a commercial fisherman for most of his life and owned and operated the Megan Betsey out of Shinnecock Inlet.

Now retired, Tim and his wife Patricia reside in Deposit, New York. They have four daughters and six grandchildren. Joe Osovet ('91) starred for the football Panthers as a captain, running back and defensive back during the 1988-90 seasons. He was a key to the 1989 League Championship club and was named All Long Island and All State the following season. He'd previously played for the Freshman and JV clubs. He was a second baseman on the baseball teams where he played from the seventh through twelfth grades, competing with the Junior High and the Freshman teams before playing with the Varsity for four years.

Joe received two college degrees, an AA in Liberal Arts from Nassau Community College in 1992 and a BA in Physical Education from Northeastern University in 1994. While at Nassau, he was named to the All Coastal Conference football team as a wide receiver and kick returner.

Joe resides in Babylon and is currently an Assistant Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator for the Nassau Community College football team. He is a Teaching Adjunct in the Physical Education Department at the college.
