Author-Alumnus returns to his alma mater

James De Vita, a 1978 North Babylon High School graduate, visited with over 250 students in the school's auditorium on March 13 to speak to them about his experiences as a student in the high school as well as his recently- published book, The Silenced. De Vita has had two young adult novels published as well as a number of screenplays. As an actor he has appeared in various plays mostly in Wisconsin where he now resides.

De Vita related some stories, both good and bad, about his personal experiences as he made his way through school. Never a great student in high school, he stressed that no matter what type of student you may be, that with hard work and perseverance, anyone can achieve their goals and become what they want to be. His admission that he flunked out of Suffolk Community College, not once but twice, drew hearty laughter from the audience.

De Vita volunteered to visit with the high school students free of charge. He initiated contact with Susan Sloan, the Young Adult Librarian at North Babylon Public Library, and made his intentions for a visit to her. Sloan then contacted Matt Erickson, the North Babylon High School librarian. The two librarians then collaborated to bring the home-grown author home.
