Babylon Rotary Club honors local scholars

The Babylon Rotary Club announced winners for its 2008 scholarships and held a May 21 meeting, introducing each of the scholars.

Since the establishment of the scholarship program, Babylon Rotary has awarded $325,000 to deserving students from local high schools. This year, 11 scholarships were awarded. Students recognized were:

Nicholas Esposito, West Babylon High School, Dr. Stanley Aldrich Memorial: Nicholas plans to attend SUNY Binghamton in the fall and will study veterinary science. He is active in Varsity Wrestling and Golf and is a member of the National Honor Society and National Foreign Language Honor Society. He is also a member of the Re-enactors Association; a group that performs live action World War II battles for the public. He is also a volunteer at animal hospitals.

Anthony Abbruscato, St. John the Baptist High School: Anthony is his school's valedictorian and a member of the National Honor Society, the Spanish, English and Science Honor societies. He serves as captain of the Varsity Crew Team and as a Big Brother to underclassmen. A Black Belt in karate, he has a successful landscaping business. He will attend Northeastern University and pursue a career in pharmacy.

•Jean Marie DeLuca, St. John the Baptist: Jean Marie has completed ten honors and two advanced placement courses this year, as well as English, sociology and biology. She is ranked in the top 10 percent of her class. She loves to dance and is a member of Danceworks, an after-school dance group where she stepped out of her comfort zone and auditioned successfully for the role of choreographer. She also teaches at a local dance school.

Sarah Grimmer, North Babylon High School: Sarah is a volunteer for her church and has worked in various school-based fundraisers. She is an integral part of the high school music program and has participated in the Science Olympiad and Leaders Club and is a member of the National Honor Society. She will be attending Sacred Heart University, where she has been accepted to the university's six-year physical therapy doctorate program.

Samantha Mazur, West Babylon High School: Samantha is a member of the National Honor Society and Foreign Language Honor Society. She is involved in numerous clubs and community service activities, including student government, Health Club and Leaders' Club. She served as Captain of the Blue team this year in Blue and Gold. She participated in programs at Christa House, Breast Cancer Walks and World Aids Day. She will be attending Seton Hall in September, majoring in business.

•Thomas Schlageter, West Babylon: Thomas will be attending SUNY Stony Brook in the fall, majoring in bio-medical engineering. He has a strong academic history and is active in numerous extra-curricular activities at his school. He participated in the Math Club, Science Olympiad, National and Foreign Language honor societies. In the summer, he participated in Brookhaven National Laboratory's Science Research Program.

Ulweena Sethi, Babylon High School: Ulweena is attending Barnard College at Columbia University in the fall. While at Babylon High School, Ulweena received the award for general excellence, the AP European History Award and the Award for AP English language and composition. She is a member of the National Honor Society and president of the local chapter of the National French Honor Society.

Erin Walter, West Islip High School: Erin ranks in the top 8 percent of her class with a rigorous academic program that includes college-level and honors-level courses in economics and English. Her commitment to the soccer world has been intense and has helped her earn the title of Captain of her league team, the Stony Brook Hornets and West Islip Varsity Soccer. She is All-County and was selected MVP of the West Islip Varsity Soccer team. She also finds time to participate in the National Honor Society and in the community as a volunteer with Special Olympics and the Elizabeth McNamee Run.

Christopher Sequeira, West Islip High School: Christopher was described by his teachers as gifted in computer science and excels in history. He ranks in the top 25 percent of his class and has completed advances placement coursework in physics., microeconomics and calculus. On a personal level, he participates in the National Honor Society, Spectrum, the school's literary magazine and Robotics. He also volunteers in his community as a firefighter since 9th grade.

•Daniel Rosenberg, North Babylon High School: Daniel excels at his school, transferring from Florida to North Babylon in the 2005-06 school year. He managed to master all of the material for the New York State Regents and will receive a Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation. He was a member of the Academic Team that competed in News12's Long Island Challenge, and completed an internship at Earth Day Network, an environmental organization in Washington D.C. He also worked on the school newspaper and will attend Oberlin College this fall.

Theresa Stoecker, Babylon High School: Theresa is a member of the National Honor Society, National Art Society and the Tri-M Music Honor Society. As a Girl Scout, she earned the prestigious Gold Award after devoting countless hours to community service, which included writing and illustrating a children's book. She is a member of the student council and Class Cabinet and is on the girl's basketball team. An artist, musician and athlete, she also holds aparttime job and will attend Stonehill College in Massachusetts in the fall where she will study international business.
