West Islip School board needs to move forward, working together for students
Public Commentary

Dear Editor:

Another Budget and Board Election Vote has run its course. What have we learned, and what are we prepared to accomplish going forward?

In West Islip, approximately 17 percent of the public voted on the Budget and 15 percent voted for Board candidates. Is it a mandate for apathy, the status quo, or continued renewal? Only time will tell, as today we get back to the peoples' business of running a school district and delivering enriched educational services within a certain community aesthetic that is desireable.

We have seen and heard much from agents of change and progress. We have seen and heard much from agents of tradition and safekeeping. What we learn from it and how we execute going forward, as a Board, will determine whether or not we will be effective in our volunteer quest to make a positive impact. North- South-East-West, For- Against-Must Have-Dont Care, Elementary-Middle-Jr High-High School wherever or whatever the parochialism delivers us...We must find a way to build consensus for growth and renewal regardless of socio-economic times, neighborhood politics and mandated conditions.

I congratulate the winners and offer my regards to those who did not win. However, we must move forward and collectively navigate towards an improved platform for education within traditions of the lifestyle each community has come to expect. I, for one, am excited about the prospects for the future. Let's take our diversity of opinions, skills and lifestyles, and find a way to make our students proud to live and be educated in our School Districts.
