Copiague woman charged with hitting police officer with car and fleeing scene
Suffolk County Police today arrested a Copiague woman after she hit an officer with her car, leading to a police on a pursuit.
A Suffolk County Police First Precinct officer was interviewing a woman regarding reports of a disturbance at 55 Wilson Avenue, Copiague at 6:45 p.m., Fri., June. 20, when the woman tried to flee the scene. Dawn Harris, 50, of 55 Wilson Ave., Copiague, first tried to leave the scene by pulling forward. Harris then put the car in reverse and struck the officer with the open driver’s side door, knocking him to the ground.
Harris fled the scene and was found by another unit in the Merrineck Shopping Center at Montauk Highway and Great Neck Road in Copiague, where she hit four parked cars. The unit attempted to stop her and she fled again at a high rate of speed, driving through several red lights. The unit pursued her to the corner of Montauk Highway and South 7th St. in Lindenhurst, where she drove her car into a corner building at that intersection.
The officer Harris struck was treated for minor injuries and released from Southside Hospital. Harris was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center with minor injuries. There were no other reports of injuries.
Harris is charged with assault 2nd degree, driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident and unlawfully fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle. Harris will be arraigned in First District Court in Central Islip on June 21.
