Former S.C. Leg. Elie Mystal disappointed, but also served his district well

Dear Editor:

In reply to your editorial "Mystal violated the public's trust," I have to agree that in the end Elie did disappoint us.

However, if we would remember how he obtained the position, in all honesty, his big sin was that he just wasn't Maxine Postal.

Maxine was one of those rare individuals who possessed the gift of exceptional public service and we should all agree that she was taken from us much too soon.

We should also remember that Elie was quite content being her chief of staff and only stepped into the spotlight to see through the efforts that she had started. Elie always admitted that he was uncomfortable in the role of politician, but kept accepting the position at the urging of the party leadership. Even though he fell short of the unattainable standard set by Maxine, we should all wish him well and thank him for his efforts. I have dealt with him a few times and he always did try to give his best. Somehow he was able to find the needed funds from a constantly shrinking county budget. My guess is that his gift was with numbers and not with public image. Let's just hope that the powers behind the scenes provide us with a candidate that is better qualified and one who really wants the job. Good luck Elie, thank you and may God bless you in your future.
