Mary O"Malley, 40-year resident of West Islip and volunteer

Mary O'Malley (nee McLaughlin), a resident of Amityville for nine years, and a former resident of West Islip for more than 40 years, was a volunteer at heart. Her family agreed that her passion in life was to help the less fortunate, including spending time with veterans at the Veteran's Home in Stonybrook, and volunteering at the Special Olympics in Suffolk County.

Mrs. O'Malley died at the age of 98 on July 12, 2008. She worked as a bookkeeper for Conklin Brass and Copper in New York City until her retirement, and was an active member of St. Monica's Church in West Islip. She started a group for young children in the American Legion and later in life, she moved to the Dominican Village Residence in Amityville.

Although Mrs. O'Malley never had children, she considered her many nieces and nephews to be her own. Her niece Rosemary Ciccone said that "she was very sweet, very dedicated to her nieces and nephews." Her niece Elizabeth Conlon adds that "she was a wonderful person; she had a terrific sense of humor and told jokes right up until a few days before her death." Her niece Rosemary recalls how she would always look forward to going to her home in West Islip.

Mrs. O'Malley and her husband built that house together in 1950. "She used to take us swimming and blueberry picking there, and gave us a lot of individual attention." Elizabeth Conlon adds that "We all loved going fishing on Deer Lake in West Islip."

In addition to volunteering and spending time with her family in West Islip, Mrs. O'Malley also loved throwing family parties and barbecues with her husband, Michael, who predeceased her.

Mrs. O'Malley also had a passion for Disney World, and vacationed there often. She was partial to the People Mover and Space Mountain.

Mrs. O'Malley leaves behind more than 30 beloved nieces and nephews from the Conlon, McLaughlin, Anatrella, Baker, Canarie, O'Malley and Walsh families. Funeral Services were held at Giove Funeral Home in Middle Island on Monday July 14, 2008, followed by a funeral Mass the next day at St. Mark's R. C. Church in Shoreham. Interment followed at the Long Island National Cemetery at Pinelawn.
