Autumn marks the end of summer and the beginning of a long sleep through winter until spring awakens nature again. It also marks another beginning— the start of a new school year, with all of the anticipation, hope and expectation that comes with new beginnings.

It's a special time, and even as adults, we can easily recall the sounds and smells and feelings that we experienced as children heading back to school in September. It is a time to leave behind comfortable flip flops and shorts and tees and get back into sensible shoes and appropriate outfits. It's getting up early, making brown bag lunches and standing in the chilly morning for the school bus. It's the smell of crayons, cafeterias and new back packs. It's the sense that we're moving on, growing up and getting back into a structure that is just not part of carefree July and August.

Some are headed to school for the first time; others making the switch from elementary to middle school or middle school to high school. For some, it is the dramatic move to college either locally or at home and beyond where life awaits them in new, interesting and often frightening ways.

Our hope is that everyone, parents, educators and students, look upon this "new beginning" as an opportunity to do better than ever before; to find wisdom and to broaden their hearts and minds; to make the most of what education has to afford them. Every community works hard to offer these opportunities and they represent every child's best hope for a rich and successful life.

Have a wonderful school year!
